Professional Piano Tuning

Piano strings are subjected to considerable tension; strings are in different ways connected to other parts of the piano, i.e. the wooden frame, the cast iron plate, the wooden wrest plank, the wooden bridges and the wooden soundboard. Anything that alters the relative position of any of these parts will cause a change in the string tension and, as a consequence, it causes the piano to go out of tune. The main contributing factors are: humidity and temperature changes, stretching of the strings, slipping tuning pins and playing.

How often should a piano be tuned?

How often should a piano be tuned?

Well, it depends upon its condition, the environment in which it lives and its usage. A piano that is not played at all and is used only as a piece of furniture will only need to be tuned once a year to maintain it at the correct pitch; a piano that is played regularly, is in good condition and is kept in a suitable environment should be tuned every 6 months, especially at the beginning of autumn and spring (when the heating is turned on or off); a piano played regularly by a professional musician or a student might need to be tuned monthly or even more frequently.

Sometimes, especially when the piano hasn’t been tuned for years, it might have dropped in pitch (a semitone or even a tone, i.e. an A might sound like a G# or even a G). In this case, the piano requires a “pitch raise”, which consists of an additional tuning prior to the fine tuning and requires longer than a simple tuning to be completed.
